Arctic explorer displays lost ship artefacts for the last time in the UK
The London International Boat Show
Excel Exhibition Centre
London
Dom Mee, Royal Marine reservist, International Yachtsman, Explorer and star of the BBC1 Ex- treme Lives series, for his gruelling row of the North Pacific, has recently returned from his latest epic maritime adventure, Arctic Quest 1831. During which he navigated his 17ft Kayak through the Northwest Passage, he then completed a mamouth trek to the Magnetic North Pole of 1831. This solo expedition also successfully crossed the Boothia Isthmus, which had not been attempt- ed since 1953. These credible firsts gained much press and television coverage throughout the expedition. Dom and his team will be at the London International Boat Show.
The expedition was under taken by Dom as a means to highlight the tales of endeavour and courage of Sir John Ross’s voyage of discovery between 1829-1833, and his attempts to find and chart the Northwest Passage. A truly epic tale of survival and a source of inspiration for Dom, “These Exploits are equal to that of Shackleton and Scott, and should never be forgotten.” Quoted Dom on his return.
This expedition has provided us with some truly remarkable discoveries. Dom has returned from the Arctic brandishing artefacts, which have been verified by independent experts as pieces of Sir John Ross’s ship the “Victory”. This vessel vanished beneath the ice having been abandoned by Ross and his crew, at the end of a four-year struggle trapped in the ice, over 170 years ago.
These Artefacts have been deemed, of such national importance that the Nanavut Government have requested that after the London Boat show, they be returned to Canada as National Treas- ures. This will be the last opportunity to view these pieces before their return to the Nanavut region. This will be a fitting conclusion, to Arctic Quest 1831, and to what has been a remarkable year in the life of Dom Mee, Maritime Explorer.
